Promises: Welcome to the African Art Museum of Maryland (AAMM), found in 1980 as Columbia, Maryland’s first Museum. The AAMM is a small Museum with no admission* costs, but with a main purpose and promise of exhibiting, for you, THE VISITOR, select, diverse artistic expressions of the continent of Africa:
Those artistic expressions include masks, carved figures, textiles, photographs, household items, body adornment, baskets, musical instruments and more as they reflect the people of the second largest world continent, Africa.
It has been documented that art museums, throughout the world, are viewed as places of interest and are visited for Pleasure, to Satisfy one’s art thirsts and to become further Enlightened. You, your visit to the AAMM is a gift to AAMM, and to be treated as such is our standard…We Promise.
So, as you consider a visit or a re-visit to AAMM, please know that the AAMM all-volunteer staff is ready, willing, and able to greet you upon your arrival, and to be of service to you as you enjoy the tour and/or your participation in our varied innovative programs that are designed to appeal to all ages.
Programs: Those programs include themed exhibits, Tours to Africa, Outreach Programs for Schools and businesses, etc., Guest Lecturers, JAZZ (America’s music with its roots in the traditional music of Africa) Arm Chair Travel, Group discussions – like “Pull Up A Chair and Share”, Observances of Black History Month, and Women’s History Month. Informal groups like the “Collectors’ Choice”, “Expanding Horizons”, “When Youth Speaks” and more.
Policies: Please observe the “Thank You for Not Touching” signs; there is a (so-marked) hands-on table included in the exhibit. For care-givers, guardians and Chaperones of individuals, Youths and Adult groups you care asked to please remember that you are responsible for the actions of those you have chosen to lead, and that there must be an adequate guardian-to-person ratio approved by AAMM staff which is necessary to maintain proper supervision and safety. It allows the continuation and full engagement of the tour or activity offered and for the protection of AAMM Visitors, its staff and property.
Don’t miss AAMM’s Event presenting members of the 67-year-old organization the Black deep-sea divers known as the Underwater Adventure Seekers as they continue their search for remnants of the ships taking the indigenous people of Africa away from their native land.

* Membership privileges for Annual or Life members can be found on AAMM’s website or please approach any AAMM representative.
* While AAMM has free* admission, it graciously accepts (if you so choose) donations of your choice, which are applied to AAMM’s applauded educational programs.
